About a week and a half ago. I was reading a article about Al Sharpton of he honored actor, producer and director Tyler Perry at their Triumph Awards. As I keep on reading the article, Al Sharpton classified Tyler Perry critics as "Proper Negros".
I think Al Sharpton is wrong for calling Tyler Perry critics who dissents from his brand of entertainment "proper negroes" is a blanket statement and offensive. Us black people do have to value ourselves, to want better, etc. Other cultures have diversity and we shouldn't marginalize ourselves on the altar of giving the black stamp of approval just because one of our own is involved.
I'm not a Tyler Perry fan at all but I respect his movies, his work effort, his ideas, etc. The issues I have with Tyler Perry is that his movies have been shallow to begin with, stereotypical at times that are recycled into different packages and he delivers his messages through comedy sometimes, drama, buffoonery that can be offensive at times. We all are exposed of Mr. Tyler Perry's work. It's everywhere now!!! This man overcome all odds from being molested and raped at a young age, being homeless by sleeping in his car to being a successful black man that's the highest paid man in all of Hollywood.
I think Tyler Perry needs to be diverse, use that responsibility to create a wider variety of stories, messages and portrayals so us black can relate to his films, ideally and more like Spike Lee''s films, etc.

Permalink Reply by Marik2011 on November 5, 2011 at 1:24pm Good valid points Mr. Moody, Is nothing wrong with us being intelligent and articulate a.k.a "proper". Our ancestors were once "whipped" or hanged for trying to learn to read and treated as subhuman and given substandard books and resources in order to keep up the illusion of inferiority. Most of our ancestors were thrown off of slave ships like a piece of trash by people with the same type of achievement limiting mentally as many of the racist infiltrators whom gloat over getting the satisfaction to present stereotypes as "the way things are".
My question is, why are the "Tyler Perry-style" characters being encouraged as the ideal...and individualism discouraged as wrong?
How the word game making "proper" improper only when it's applied to us blacks and discouraging independent thought?
I remembered a statement that Dave Chapelle made while he was doing stand-up comedy while back before he left his show, Why us black actors have get starting roles as dressing in drags? Most of us brothers don't agree with the idea of a man dressing in drags and insisted if isn't an outright strange obsession with trying to make this a "norm".
Why punishing a brother for disagreeing with the racist "social" castration and mockery that continues in Hollywood where us black men ending up wearing a dress on television or movies in order to be finally "accepted"?
Also, It is sad that us blacks struggle with issues with relationships and stereotypes within their own race. That sad part is that we perpetuate so many of the stereotypes about our race. Us blacks for years have struggle to find their own identity within the our own race and that has been going on since slavery...Other races dont have the cultural and race identity problems that us blacks have. T.D. Jakes gave a good analysis of this when he stated that when Africans were brought, sold, or stolen into slavery, many of them came from different tribes and been force to understand each other and get along. Each tribe had their own identity and culture. I think what I am trying to say is, like TD Jakes, he realized that African is full of Africans but not all Africans are alike. Other races don't have that issues because they don't struggle with race identity. However, in the United States, we do.
For years we have been called many things from niggers, to coloreds, to negro, to Blacks, Afro-Americans, to African Americans, etc...We have been fighting so long to unify our race under one name, now that times have changed, people are telling us that is it okay to be diverse within our own race when we really never had any unity...It is confusing and sad...So I am not shocked that there is decension within our race. When I went to college and finished 5 years ago, I was told that I was acting too proper. I was kinda offended by it but I didn't let it get to me.
Finally, Until this idenity issue is resolved..it stalls the progress of black equality in our country...and other races not aware of this internal issue will be just be confused why blacks have class warfare amongst their own community..on a wider scale though..it's part of the human condition to be envious of someone that is well off while others struggle on a day-to-day basis...then again in a predominantly white society..Caucasians will always be more comfortable with an upper scale educated black person than they will with a black person stuck in the ghetto through no fault of thier own.

Chris Brown is involved in a few beefs with other industry artists right now. Get the deets on what's going on between him and Meek Mill and Raz B!

The word on the street is that Meek Mill got his verse on Chris Brown's "Don't Judge Me" dropped from the Fortune disc because Chris got pissy that Meek was hanging with Rihanna at a strip club.
Chris wasn't too pleased that Rihanna stopped by Meek Mill's party at Club Perfections last month so he bumped Meek off the disc. Over the weekend, Meek tweeted,
We shall see how this one play's out. But you know how pissy Chris can be......
And in other Chris beefs..........

Former B2K member Raz B has allegedly written a book called This Boy's Life. We say allegedly because we have not been able to verify existence of the book with the publishing company or Raz B's reps. But rumor has it that the book features explosive allegations about former B2K members (Omarion, Lil' Fizz, J Boog), Bow Wow, Ray J, Chris Stokes and Chris Brown all being gay.
On Chris the book says,
“They say you never know who knows who. Chris Brown didn’t think about that when he attacked me online. I have a friend that’s very close to Chris’ camp who told me that Chris was involved with an up and coming songwriter Andre Merritt. So when Chris started going in calling people ‘gay’ and ‘fags’ I just dropped Andre Merritt’s name. I knew it was true when he decided to shut up.”
Chris responded (his tweets were later deleted) to the alleged book saying,

If this book ever hits shelves, the fallout could be very interesting. We'll keep you posted.

Andre 3000 is over in Dublin filming the Jimi Hendrix biopic. Get deets on the film and see Ne-Yo and Jamie Foxx hosting a pool party in Las Vegas.

Andre Benjamin aka Andre 3000 (who celebrated his 38th birthday yesterday) began filming All Is by My Side, a Jimi Hendrix biopic, today in Dublin, Ireland.

Andre 3000 wants fans to be surprised by the film so he avoided photos so everything will be fresh when it hits the screen.

But when it hits the screen, don't expect to hear Jimi's original music. Apparently, the estate is not on board with the biopic. The estate released a statement saying,
"Experience Hendrix CEO Janie Hendrix, sister of Jimi Hendrix, and the EH board have not ruled out a 'biopic' in the future though producing partners would, out of necessity, have to involve the company from the inception of any such film project if it is to include original Jimi Hendrix music or composition."
Andre 3000 will likely have to record covers of all Jimi songs used in the film. But hey.....isn't that what we wanted anyway?
And in Las Vegas...........

Yesterday, Ne-Yo hosted Beach Life's Rehab Pool in the Hard Rock Hotel.

He tweeted, Chill day in my hometown Vegas, sipping @Malibu_Red at Rehab Pool. Life is good! #Compound - R.E.D 9/18/12

He also paraded around with a bevy of beauties and got the crowd hyped.

Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx was the party's other host and he also hyped the crowd.
